The Ethics Committee convened yesterday and decided to propose that the Parliamentary Assembly suspends the immunity of Golden Dawn MPs Germenis, Iliopoulos, Boukouras, Panagiotaros, Kasidiaris and Alexopoulos, who face various criminal charges.
Golden Dawn’s Germenis, Iliopoulos and Boukouras are facing charges of establishing and participating in a criminal organization, while Panagiotaros, Kasidiaris and Alexopoulos are to face charges for criminal actions in the past. Of the six MPs only Germenis and Alexopoulos attended the proceedings to explain themselves.
While addressing the charges, Germenis claimed that his grandfather used to read the Communist Party’s newspaper “Rizospastis” in the 1960s. KKE MP Spyros Halvatzis intervened and reminded him that during the 1960s the Communist Party was outlawed and as the newspaper was in very limited, underground circulation.
The Golden Dawn MP claimed that his “persecution is political” and that he “never expected that the time would come where I would be accused of overthrowing the government, of treason, when I have a Greek flag at home. I don’t have a tank or anything”.
Other MPs who were present at the Committee reported that Germenis was rather anxious and nervous during his hearing. The MPs revealed that Germenis that even claimed to not like the army and that during his military service avoided exercises.
The other Golden Dawn MP, Alexopoulos, is accused of operating a pirate radio station and to that end submitted a relevant license he acquired from the Ministry of Transport.
