“Security and the protection of citizens are a social good and the right of the people. We have the duty to tend to securing that right, with the valuable cooperation of all of you,” Gerovasili said upon assuming her new duties.
Main opposition New Democracy has often lambasted the government over deficiencies in security and policing.
“We are well aware that there are open issues, and problems that were aggravated during the years of the crisis. We have the political will to confront them immediately, lucidly, systematically, and effectively,” she said.
“We all know that in the transition to the 21st century, our country confronted major problems. The prime minister himself has often referred to the challenges of handling the refugee and economic crises,” said Gerovasili.
“Our country, despite the dire straits of the crisis, has until now never faced a security crisis. One of our basic concerns is to avert any such prospect,” she said.
