Cyprus lodges complaint against Turkey with UN Secretary General

The Republic of Cyprus has lodged charges against Turkey with the UN, regarding Ankara’s violations of Cyprus’ airspace and territorial waters during June, 2018.
The protest was detailed in a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, which was delivered by the first secretary of Cyprus’ permanent mission to the UN, Michalis Mavros.
The letter was accompanied by two documents which described in detail all of Turkey’s violations of international air transport regulations in Cyprus’ airspace. It also detailed the illegal use by Turkish war ships of ports that remain closed.
The letter states, inter alia, that the aforementioned actions of Turkey, which has illegally occupied the northern part of the Republic of Cyprus since 1974, “clearly aim to undermine the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus”.

The letter also stresses that there is only one legal authority on Cyprus, which is the Republic of Cyprus, as confirmed by various UN Security Council resolutions, and especially resolution 541 (1983) and 550 (1984).
