US Ambassador to Athens Geoffrey Pyatt has expressed fears of an accident between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean, following a series of tense incidents near the Greek rock islets of Imia.
In an interview with Greek Skai television that will air this evening, when asked about the prospect of a clash in the Aegean, Pyatt said that his concern and fear is the possibility of an accident.
The US envoy suggested that as long as there are deadly and complex military systems operating at close distance, there is always the danger of an accident, which could produce major complications in Greece-Turkey relations.
Support for UN envoy Nimetz
The ambassador expressed US support for the ongoing UN efforts to resolve the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia naming issue.
He said that Washington supports special representative Matthew Nimetz and the UN.
Pyatt said the US in the coming days and weeks will do everything it can to support Nimetz’s efforts.
He also underlined that it is in the interest of Western Balkan countries to join Nato and the European Union.
