The arrival of about 200 refugees on Lesvos on Friday morning has caused concern among local authorities, given the recent turmoil on the island.
Reports indicate that thousands more, primarily Africans, were held in refugee camps in northwest Turkey until recently, when Turkish authorities abandoned the camps.
According to the Athens-Macedonia News Agency, Turkish authorities do not appear to be preventing human traffickers from helping refugees cross over to the Greek islands and into Europe.
The Police Directorate of the North Aegean announced that there are 11,344 asylum seekers on the islands – specifically 5,772 on Lesvos, 3,515 on Chios and 2,057 on Samos.
