The International Monetary Fund has called for the Greek government to deregulate store working hours so that shops may be open on all Sundays, according to a report in the Ethnos newspaper.
According to the email which the IMF sent to the Greek government on Friday, the aim is to boost competitiveness, with the Fund noting that the measure was included in the first ‘toolkit’ devised by the OECD and has not been implemented.
The Ministry of Finance, claims the newspaper article, rejected the request, explaining that a new framework is being developed to include qualitative and quantitative criteria in determining whether area can be classed as a tourist area. In such areas, the Ministry added, the district government will be able to determine the number of Sundays when shops operate.
