The renovation of the National Gallery in Athens is expected to be complete by the end of 2018, with the grand opening scheduled to take place in early 2019.

According to a report in Ta Nea, the Museum Council has approved a museological study which will largely determine the permanent collections and exhibitions on display.

After the renovation has concluded, the gallery’s space will be expanded by 2,230 sqm and will be able to exhibit over 1,000 works of art, more than double the 450 that were on display until recently.

The Gallery will exhibit works from El Greco and more contemporary artists from the 19th century, such as Nikiforos Lytras, Nikolaos Gyzis and Georgios Iakovidis, as well as seascapes by Konstantinos Volanakis and early impressionist works by Georgios Roilos and Iakovos Rizos.

The second floor of the Gallery will be dedicated to the 20th century, covering varied artists such as Konstantinos Parthenis and Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Gikas, while the third floor will cover art from the post-war era until the turn of the century.
