It seems that the leaders of the parties that under-represent the formerly hegemonic force in the center-left, the progressive bloc, are doing all they can to continue the policy of depreciation. They shadowbox via leaks and statements, coming up with excuses and reasons to collide, so that they block the development of a much-needed new political vehicle, which extends beyond the thresholds of the progressive bloc at present.

While the deficit in political representation is a give, that it is more than clear that the people are refusing to be trapped in a bipolar struggle between SYRIZA and New Democracy, the people have been calling for the creation of a new body which will extend beyond the existing parties. The leaders and a large section of the political personnel however are primarily interested in preserving their power and their political survival.

It is not the programmatic positions that are blocking the unification process, but rather the aims and intentions of certain divs that are constantly putting their future before the future of their side. With the people suffering the consequences of the crisis for the sixth year running, some are trying to manage a formerly dominant party…

Nobody however will be saved, even it one survives on a political temporarily, if the decline continues. There is an important section of society that is agonizing, turning its back on SYRIZA and not trusting New Democracy, waiting for the greater democratic bloc to rise up to the occasion.

If they cannot do so, if they are unable to leave their power, they will quickly realize that the people and history will not be cutting them any slack. The time for petty political and personal games is running out. And when they realize that, it will be too late for everyone…
