One of the greatest and most popular actors in Greek cinema, Andreas Barkoulis, passed away at the age of 80 on Tuesday morning.
Barkoulis, who as born in Piraeus in 1936, became an icon and heartthrob in the 1960s. The talented actor began his career in 1957 and starred in over 110 comedies, and dramatic films, proving his versatility and productivity.
The famed actor starred opposite legendary actresses, such as Aliki Vougiouklaki, Jenny Karezi, Irene Papa and Rena Vlachopoulou. In the late 1960s with Greek cinema in decline, Barkoulis emigrated to the USA where he worked as a singer for a while. He returned to Greece in the late 1970s where he resumed his acting career.
Later on in his career he performed on stage and in television productions, with his final role in the 2002 film Alexander and Aishe.
