The Ministry of Education published the university entry requirements for the new academic year on Wednesday, which saw a significant drop in many cases. The drop in grade requirements has been attributed to both the poorer performance of students in certain nationwide exams, as well as the choices they registered in their university preferences.
Based on the Ministry’s data that was announced on Wednesday, university candidates primarily focused on departments that offered the best possible job prospects and departments that are based near their homes. As such, the once-popular schools of education and polytechnic departments saw significant drops in their entry requirements.
Overall 246 university departments saw their entry requirements drop compared to last academic year, while 217 raised their requirements. Even the Athens School of Medicine saw its entry requirements drop by 309 to 18,924 points (the top points a student can accumulate are 20,000 points).
The greatest drop in entry requirements documented was at the German language Department in Thessaloniki, which dropped by 5,664 points to 6,600 points. Conversely, the Department of Musical Studies in Athens saw the greatest rise, by 8,000 points, to 13,000.
