Despite the requests from New Democracy, Popular Union, the River and PASOK, the President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos will be entering telephone consultations with the political leaders, rather than calling a council meeting of political leaders, after Panagiotis Lafazanis exhausts the exploratory mandate he received.
President Pavlopoulos will contact the political leaders via telephone to determine whether there is any possibility of a government being formed by the current Parliament. Given that SYRIZA, the Independent Greeks and the Communist Party have clarified that they have no interest in forming a government, this is more of a formal procedure.
Although the President has been criticized for the course of action he has chosen, sources from Mr. Pavlopoulos’ circles underlined that the Constitution does not clarify how the political leaders may be consulted on the possibility of forming a government.
As such, a caretaker government is expected to be appointed by Friday after the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras‘ resignation is formally accepted, with the president of the Supreme Court Vasiliki Thanou appointed Prime Minister and elections scheduled for the 20th of September.
