Despite the government’s optimism regarding the negotiations, nobody can be certain about how they will turn out in the end. The German Ministry of Finances, a known doubter of Greek intentions, remains skeptical and demands even more guarantees.

It is no coincidence after all that the German Press on Thursday was full of articles referring to a bridge agreement and not a final and comprehensive agreement. Such a solution would be absolutely detrimental for our country.

Quite simply it would maintain the uncertainty, extend the political problem since the government would be forced to vote for prerequisite measures without an agreement in its hands and the economy would remain insecure, with doubts being constant and debilitating.

The truth is that the European Commission and European Central Bank want to finish with the Greek issue. However, they take advantage of the German Finance Ministry’s doubts and demand an ever increasing number of prior actions.

In any case the government doesn’t have many options. The “bridge” is problematic and the prerequisite measure may – politically – be unbearable. It is probably better to be over with it sooner, rather than later. Each delay generates even more doubt and supports the arguments of the Grexit proponents.

Likewise and for similar reasons, it is crucial to deflect the scenarios of snap elections. The prospect of early elections before the economy has stabilized is equally problematic.

Based on all of the above, the government has no option other than to do all it can to safeguard the country against any threats, both external and internal.

This would mean that it is necessary to reach a complete and comprehensive agreement with the partners, by all means and at any cost. Subsequently, the main applicable laws must be adopted, in order to cast away the many doubts. Only then, after the country has been safeguarded, can the path towards elections open up.

That is the sequence of events dictated by the national interest. Everything else is quite simply precarious and harmful to the interests of the country and the people.
