The Minister of Finances Yanis Varoufakis argued that the Greek government wants to reach an agreement and expressed his belief that this is possible, provided the European leaders meet up and have the necessary political will.

Mr. Varoufakis commented that the proposal submitted by the institutions was “not sustainable” and revealed that his German counterpart Wolfgang Schäuble agrees, but does not believe that there is an alternative. The Greek minister asserted that if the proposal were to be accepted, then the Greek crisis would only be postponed for six or twelve months.

Furthermore he underlined that the Greek government wants this to be “the final negotiation” and stressed that the political leaders in Europe have a historic responsibility towards the European peoples to find a solution. When asked whether he was confident about the outcome of the talks, he responded “some times more than others”.

The Greek Minister, who met with his German counterpart on Monday morning in Berlin, met with representatives from the SPD, Die Linke and Greens parties and delivered a speech at the Hans Boeckler Institute.
