The main opposition party SYRIZA has a steady 2.6% lead over the governing New Democracy party, according to the latest survey conducted by Kapa Research for the Sunday edition of To Vima. New Democracy has been banking on the popularity of Antonis Samaras and conflicting statements made by opposition candidates, while SYRIZA appears to have taken full advantage of the fragmentation in the Center Left.
When asked which party they intend to vote for in the upcoming general elections, the respondents answered the following:
- SYRIZA – 28.1%
- New Democracy – 25.5%
- The River – 6.5%
- Golden Dawn – 5.4%
- PASOK – 5.2%
- KKE – 5%
- Movement of Socialists Democrats – 2.8%
- ANEL – 2.6%
- Other party – 4.1%
- Blank vote – 2.2%
- Undecided – 12.6%
Irrespective of how they intend to vote, a 63.4% of respondents believe that SYRIZA will come first, compared to 29.1% who believe that New Democracy will prevail (7.1% were uncertain and 0.4% believe it will be another party). When asked which party they would like to come in third place, the respondents answered as follows:
- The River – 26.4%
- PASOK – 20.2%
- KKE – 13%
- Golden Dawn – 7.6%
- Movement of Socialists Democrats – 6.3%
- Other party – 14.4%
- Undecided – 12.1%
The voters seem to be divided regarding the greatest fears, with 46.4% fearing the potential financial “adventures” in case SYRIZA comes first, while 43.6% fear the continuation of New Democracy’s austerity policy, should it come first
While ND’s Antonis Samaras (43.9%) is considered a more suitable prime minister than Alexis Tsipras (36.2%), about 60.7% of respondents are displeased with Mr. Samaras’ efforts over the past two and half years in charge. On the contrary, 61.1% are displeased with Mr. Tsipras’ efforts as opposition leader.
