The arrest of fugitive Nikos Maziotis and everything that preceded it in the Athens city center illustrate how dangerous and ruthless the new generation of terrorists are on the on hand and its dramatic futility on the other. The unsolicited would-be punishers may create temporary chaos and problems with their bomb attacks and murders, but their fate is sealed. It has been historically proven, in Greece and the rest of the world, that wherever the rule of law is in place and defending democratic achievements, terrorist groups are either marginalized and disappear, or they are apprehended, sooner or later.

Violence in all of its forms, much less terrorism, cannot in any case be an acceptable means of political intervention, as its young and old devotees may claim. It is futile and self-destructive path. This was proven once more in Maziotis’ case.

These forty years since the restoration of democracy have been the longest period of democratic stability in Greek history, despite the problems, the political conflicts. The threat of violence and terrorism are not in the position to change this, because as much as the few unsolicited armed saviors on the margins of society may not want to admit it, their biggest enemy is the respect of democratic conquests and rights.
