The mayors of Filiata, Pogoni, Konitsa, Nestorio, Kastoria and Prespes have united their voices and requested to see the Prime Minister and Ministers of Public Order and National Defense to discuss tackling crime along the Greek-Albanian border.
In their open, the mayors explain that border security is lacking, allowing criminals to enter Greece at will and terrorize the residents in the north of Greece. While the municipalities have taken initiatives to address the problems, they explain that they need the State’s support to be effective.
Specifically the mayors are calling for a return of border guards, according to the original border center plans, while supporting the local police departments with additional staff and equipment. Furthermore, the mayors have asked for the Greek-Albanian border to be covered by Frontex, as with Greece’s borders on the east.
