The 54-year-old Serbian mother of a 13-year-old girl who died of carbon monoxide poisoning after using a makeshift heater and was subsequently arrested for negligent manslaughter, has been given a six-month residence permit for humanitarian reasons, at the request of the Minister of Order Nikos Dendias.
According to the official report, the mother lost her consciousness at around 10pm on Sunday and when she recovered, she noticed that her 13-year-old daughter would not respond. An ambulance was rushed out, but unfortunately it was too late for the young girl. The 54-year-old mother was then arrested by the police for negligent manslaughter, with the prosecutor later dropping charges.
During her arrest, it transpired that the 54-year-old had problems with immigration service and was initially given a 30-day permit to leave Greece and return to Serbia. The Minister of Public later extended the permit to six months. The Municipal Council of Thessaloniki and the Serbian Consulate decided to cover costs of transferring the victim’s remains to Serbia.
Neighbors revealed that 54-year-old mother and her daughter had been living in Greece for about ten years and the family was struggling to get by. The mother had been unemployed in recent times and as a result her power supply had been cut off for the past three months. The shocked neighbors also noted how the mother was proud and never asked for any help.
