Editorial: A common front against the neo-Nazis

For the first time in long time it appears that the government and opposition are managing to come to an agreement over a lowest common denominator. The common front of the democratic forces against the neo-Nazi threat, despite the differences, constitutes a positive step forward.

The negotiations that preceded the mutual agreement prove that where there is political will, there is a way. Conversely it demonstrated that when there is the will, the political conflicts and temporary party gains can give way to the necessary consent.

Obviously the political and ideological differences continue and will continue to exist. The coordination against the neo-Nazi horror indicates that they can overcome, even if only on this level, the pointless and divisive debating that leads nowhere and fuels the enemies of democracy.

The effort to combat the neo-Nazi ideology is duty of all democratic political forces. Working together to tackle it sends a message to society, to the people who for various reasons have be swept up by the so-called anti-systemic and nationalist cries and furthermore, contributes towards the meaningful democratization of political life.

The revelation of the neo-Nazi actions was a wake-up call for the political system and proof that divisive conflict cannot be the norm; that we can hope for a political conflict where the opponent is not considered an enemy or underminer of democracy and social peace; that there is still room for real debate, with standpoints and arguments that won’t constantly lead to tension, polarization and depreciation. It will be in everyone’s interest, especially the country, if the coordination against the neo-Nazis is not crushed under the pressure of the usual petty political interests…
