Government and Opposition clash over telephone surveillance

The government and opposition have clashed over the allegations that SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras commented that the telephone lines of his party’s MPs, especially his own, are being monitored. The Minister of Public Order Nikos Dendias immediately demanded that SYRIZA refutes the allegation; otherwise he would file a complaint at the Supreme Court.

SYRIZA’s spokesman Panos Skourletis told To Vima that his party would not release a formal announcement and stressed that “we deny any such thing being said at the parliamentary group’s assembly”. When asked if he think that their phone lines are being monitored, Mr. Skourletis responded “how should I know?

PASOK warned that “without a sense of fundamental priorities, no political power can serve its main purpose, which is to defend democratic values”. Senior government officers also commented that “politics require responsibility and accountability”.
