Despite the questions and concerns caused by the decision to not detain the three Golden Dawn MPs, we cannot lose sight of the forest for the trees. Primarily because being released from custody does not insinuate innocence in any case. The three MPs are still charged with serious crimes, which will be determined by the procedures provided by the laws and Constitution. Secondly, it is quite obvious to the overwhelming majority of the people that the neo-Nazis were a paramilitary group hell-bent on terrorizing, stabbing and extorting all those which it set in its sights. This was proven by the bullying and threats against journalists and television crews after they investigative judge released them.
We must not forget that the investigation of the case has a long way to go. That two judicial officers felt that, at this stage of the case, the charges brought against the three MPs by a Supreme prosecutor were not enough to justify their detention, does not mean that they are not responsible for the actions they are accused of, or that they can pretend to be innocent. Justice has the responsibility and duty to carry out the investigation, to reveal who is truly responsible for a series of specific crimes, with respect to the laws and rights of the accused – just like democracy demands, even if democracy’s aspiring rapists do not recognize it.
The evidence revealed so far is enough to make the neo-Nazi ideology and actions of Golden Dawn obvious, even to the skeptics. Their occasional celebrations must not interfere or cancel the struggle for their political, ideological, social and moral isolation, which is taking place alongside the investigation. Fortunately democracy has all the legal means and ways to win the battle against her aspiring usurpers. It is the duty of an organized state and society to disallow this gang neo-Nazi gang from pretending to be a political party, by using violence and terrorism to prevail. The tolerance they enjoyed in the past few years must end, once and for all.
