The Minister of Public Order Nikos Dendias was invited on ANT1 TV to discuss the recent resurgence of crime and group escapes at the Malandrino and Trikala prisons. The Minister reported that “the country is full of Kalashnikovs”.

When asked about how the weapons enter the country, Mr. Dendias explained that “the country has endless boarders; I must tell you that the Greek coastline is equal to the African coastline, while we also have boarders on mountains that we cannot protect. The issue is not how they enter. What matters is how these weapons are being used and have changed the security conditions in Greece. The Greek Police is before an unprecedented challenge and might be the most difficult one faced by a European country today”.

Mr. Dendias also referred to the difficulties the Police experiences, while extending his gratitude to Police staff for their patience, self-sacrifice and commitment to their duties, despite their low wages. The Minister stated that “we are preparing a systemic change in the Greek Police; the bill will come into effect by autumn, changing everything in the Greek Police”.
