Students in Athens today are protesting against the Ministry of Education’s controversial “Athina” program. The plan was to be discussed in Parliament today, however the discussion will likely be postponed for next Tuesday.

The “Athina” plan includes the merging of universities and technical schools, causing great tension not just amongst students and local communities, but also MPs from the tripartite government. The protesters will meet outside the Ministry of Education at 12:30, with the participation of 36 student unions from all over Greece.

The confederation representing the parents of secondary education student has also decided to take action at 2pm today in Athens, Piraeus and Kefalonia, demanding a better education.

Specifically, the confederation demands that the missing teaching hours be made up, no schools merge, the reduction of number of students per class, a meal is provided for every student in all schools and that measures are taken for the maintenance and improvement of school buildings.

The meetings have been scheduled at the junction of Kifisias and Alexandras, at the junction of Galatsiou and Patision, Korai Square in Piraeus and the former prefecture in Kefalonia.
