Makis Psomiadis acquitted of illegal betting

26.2.13

Makis Psomiadis was acquitted by the Appeal Council of the illegal betting charges between 2009 and 2011. The businessman, who is still detained on charges of forming a criminal organization and money laundering, was originally accused of betting on five Kavala F.C. matches, during the time when he was team owner.

Mr. Psomiadis explained that he was not involved in Kavala F.C., since his son Stavros Psomiadis was a team shareholder. Mr. Psomiadis claimed that the whole case was based on “journalist games”. It appears that the criminal charges against Mr. Psomiadis did not detail any betting wins and could not determine whether Mr. Psomiadis bet for or against Kavala F.C.

Mr. Psomiadis will still remain detained at Korydallos prison, despite his acquittal, as he still faces a number of charges. Regarding the case of embezzling large sums from AEK F.C., the Greek courts are still awaiting the necessary legal documents from FYROM, where Mr. Psomiadis was arrested.
