An old building in Agio Panteleimonas has collapsed due to the heavy rainfall that struck Athens this morning. The building was sealed a week ago, but investigations are under way to determine if anybody was caught inside.
Currently three Fire Brigade vehicles with ten fire-fighters and an EMAK unit with a specially-trained dog have arrived at the scene of the building at 28, Magnisias Street, to begin investigating the ruins.
The Fire Brigade has received over 1,000 phone calls, mostly over floods in the Attica region. About 70 crews with 140 fire-fighters have been deployed to pump water from flooded basements and rooms.
Traffic on Piraeos Street, the new Athens-Corinth national high way and the Egaleo peripheral has been restored. On Sygrou Avenue traffic is being diverted to Glyfada. Many areas are still without electricity, as the DEI substations have flooded and fallen trees have damaged power lines.
