Citizens of Ierissos have denounced a climate of police terror and unlawful detainments, following the Saturday night attack on the gold mining site in Skouries of Halkidiki.

According to the reports, the police detain dozens of citizens under threat of disobedience charges and are forced to give genetic material samples. In one case two family men “disappeared” at 5pm for over five hours, with the police refusing to confirm their detainment.

Their relatives and lawyers contacting the police department of Polygyros and the Police Directorate of Halkidiki, however the police officers claimed to be unaware of any such detainment, further stressing the relatives.

The “mystery” was solved when SYRIZA MP Katerina Iglezi intervened and contacted the police director. According to a report of the newspaper “Efimerida ton Syntakton”, Mrs. Iglezi stated that “the police director claimed to have no jurisdiction over the matter and refused to pick up the phone for hours. They were treated like common criminals. They were forced to give genetic material, they had their fingerprints and pictures taken”.

According to the same report, over 50 local citizens have been detained since Sunday. Many of those detained claim the police threatened them with insubordination charges and further detainment, in order to acquire genetic material samples.
