The Drugs Enforcement Department of the Financial and Economic Crime Unit (SDOE) announced that it seized a container in Piraeus with about 26 million opiate pills which was being shipped to Libya and ISIS.
According to Greek authorities the illicit shipment has a street value of 11.7 million euros. The pills were likely to be distributed amongst fighters of the so-called “Islamic State”. They are also sold on the black market, with the revenue going towards arms purchases.
The container, which was shipped from India, was seized after a tip off from the USA’ Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). It does not appear that any Greek individuals were involved in the case, however the investigation continues.
