The former Minister of Finances Yanis Varoufakis gave a number of interviews to international media outlets over the weekend, where he commented on the latest political developments in Greece and Europe.
In an extensive interview to the Guardian Mr. Varoufakis argued that “it would be interesting” if he were to stand trial for high treason in Greece, as this would give him the opportunity “to expose them for what they are”. Mr. Varoufakis also maintains that the recent bailout agreement is unsustainable and defended his actions in making contingency plans.
Mr. Varoufakis expressed his belief that the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has “fallen prey to his advisors and ego and is looking to become the ‘new De Gaulle, or Mitterrand’ more likely” and that he is gradually losing support from the electorate. Regarding the upcoming elections, Mr. Varoufakis ruled out any chance of joining Panagiotis Lafazanis’ Popular Union party.
French newspaper Le Monde also published an interview Mr. Varoufakis over the weekend, where he opined that the “the real target of Dr. Schäuble is France, its welfare state, its labor law and its state companies”. According to Mr. Varoufakis, the German Finance Minister views Greece as an experiment in austerity.
