The deadlock at the Eurogroup as well as the rather negative climate that dominated the summit discussion for Greece further extend the confusion and uncertainty regarding the possibility of reaching an agreement in the little time that is left. The Greek government is a difficult spot, as it is being under immense pressure and the voices of support gradually are fading away, making the negotiations even harder.

Worse of all though is that the most onerous and catastrophic scenarios are being discussed. Not just in the international media, but amongst the spokespersons of governments and institutions. The government has a major responsibility for managing the situation, but so do – in part at least – the European partners and IMF, who undermine any attempt to bridge the differences with their demands.

In the time that is left until the current program expires, there is one last opportunity for rationality to prevail and avert the worse case scenario that is looming. There is still a change of reaching a compromise, so long as the lack of trust between the two sides is restored and the absurd demands are abandoned.

After five ears of painful sacrifices Greek society deserves a change to return to normality. The plan B and threats of Grexit that are being circulated do not suit the history of Europe, or the painful consequences that the Greek people have experienced in the past few years.

The declared position of the people, that they want to remain in the heart of Europe, must be respected and accepted by all; from the Greek government, as well as the European leaders and IMF. The differences that may still exist cannot be the cause for jeopardizing the future of an entire people.
