The Ministry of Interior’s draft bill on the acquisition of Greek citizenship will be discussed in Parliament on Tuesday. The discussion is expected to last two – or three, if deemed necessary – sessions in Parliament.
The bill implements changes to the Code of Greek Citizenship and integrates European Union directives of the acquisition of citizenship and amendments that have been made to the Migration code.
According to the draft, the Greek citizenship is available to the children of migrants that are born in Greece, enroll and study a Greek school, while one parent remains legally in the country for a set amount of time; under-age migrants who reside legally and permanently in Greece and who have completed 9 year of studies in Greek schools or 6 of which in secondary education; adult migrants who reside legally and permanently in the country and have completed school and university studies in Greece.
During the discussion in Parliament, anti-racist and migrant rights organizations have arranged a concert in support of providing citizenship to all children. The concert, which will begin at 6pm on Syntagma Square, will feature performances by Encradia, Stathis Drogosis, Apostolos Rizos, Mania Papadimitriou, Natasa Moisoglou, RADIO Sol, Nikos Zournis and Antigoni Basakarou.
