Samaras and Lagarde to discuss funding gap and Greek debt

Even though the Minister of Finances Yannis Stournaras is meant to attest the IMF’s annual meeting with the rest of the EU and Eurozone Finance Ministers, a number of outstanding details in the Greek program in relation to the critical upcoming Eurogroup on the 14th of October have kept him Athens.

Nevertheless, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will relay Greek positions on the program in his meeting with IMF chief Christine Lagarde, during their 3pm (local time) meeting in Washington D.C. on Tuesday. The IMF’s representative in Greece Poul Tomsen and Greece’s IMF representative Thanos Katsampas will also be present at the meeting.

The main points of discussion are expected to be fiscal developments, the progress of prior actions and reforms and – critically – the financing gap that has become apparent in the Greek program and the viability of Greek debt.

The financing gap and debt viability are paramount subjected for both the IMF and the EU, which are expected to be addressed in the near future. Specifically the funding gap will be dealt with by the Eurogroup scheduled for the 22nd of November, while the debt viability tackled by the end of March 2014.

Greece will be represented by the president of the Ministry of Finances’ Body of Financial Advisers Panos Tsakloglou.
