The Minister of Growth Kostis Hatzidakis and Minister of Shipping Kostis Mousouroulis will inaugurate the connection of the port of Piraeus with the railway at Thriasio, an important project that will turn the port into an important transit node in southeastern Europe.
The new, single-lane railway will be 17 kilometers long and will be used exclusively for commercial activities. The railway begins at the western side of the port at the south Ikonio, connecting Piraeus to the rest of the railway system at the Thriasio Pedio station.
The project, which was first-announced in 2000, will reduce the time required for the transport of goods, meaning that ships departing from the ports of Antwerp or Amsterdam will not have to circumnavigate Europe.
Based on the original time plan, the agreement should have been activated by the end of February, with TRAINOSE being responsible for the transfer of two 40-container trains per week.
The goal is for shipments to leave the port of Piraeus, head to Ikonio and Eidomeni via the railway and from there to be forwarded to FYROM, Serbia, Hungary, Austria and ultimately, the Czech Republic.
