On Wednesday evening, about 30 black-clad, flag-waving members of far right-wing party Golden Dawn attempted to interrupt the distribution of food of a cultural association in Nafplio on suspicion that immigrants might also be receiving assistance.
Christina Stavroulaki, president of the association, explained that they distribute food to local people in need every Wednesday. She reported that she received phone calls asking whether immigrants receive any food. She replied that how they distribute the food is none of their business.
Later in the evening a group of people dressed in black and waving flags congregated opposite the association offices. According to Mrs. Stavroulaki they were “verbally offensive” and harassed “suspicious” citizens leaving with food, demanding to know their nationality.
Mrs. Stavroulaki explained that the food is collected from donations of local citizens and distributed based on social criteria, such as tax declarations and employment status, without taking nationality into consideration. The association president further underlined the social nature of their actions, condemning “dictatorial and violent attitudes”.
