The President of the nationwide confederation of workers (GSEE) G. Panagopoulos commented on Vima 99.5 the General Secretary of the Ministry of Finances G. Mergos’ statement that the minimum wage is still high: “I hope it was a huge mistake. If there is even a hint that there will be further [wage] cuts, there will be a social explosion”.
Mr. Panagopoulos further added that “they all forget what’s going on in the market, with a huge increase in undeclared and uninsured employment”, stressing that there is no legal order regarding wages.
The general secretary caused an uproar when he claimed that despite the unit labor cost being reduced, he estimated that the minimum wage is still “too high”, which is something the government would have “to look into”.
