Amnesty International: “Greek police cannot Photoshop problems away”

5.2.13

Amnesty International has asked that Greek authorities immediately investigate the allegations of police brutality in the arrest of four in relation to two armed bank robberies in Velvento of Kozani.

Marek Marczyński, the Deputy Director of the Europe and Central Asia Programme at Amnesty International, expressed his concern of “recurring allegations of torture and ill-treatment by Greek police”. Amnesty International mentions both the official police story, as well as the allegations of family members and lawyers.

Mr. Marczyński also commented on the crudely-edited pictures the police publicized, which the Minister of Public Order Nikos Dendias claimed was “to allow for suspects to be recognized”. Mr Marczyński responded that “Greek authorities cannot just Photoshop their problems away, [the] culture of impunity needs to be stopped”.
