The Ministry of Finances has targeted car owners and plans to start sending out reminders for road tax along with the luxury tax in October. The luxury tax applies to all cars with a 1.929 liter engine or larger.

This means that the owners of luxury vehicles will be called to pay between 947 to 5,140 euros, depending on the size and age of their car. The tax comes into effect retroactively, so taxpayers sold a luxury vehicle earlier in the year, will still be liable for its use in 2012.

The Ministry of Finances expects to collect about 136 million euros on an annual basis. Aside from vehicles, the luxury tax also applies to swimming pools and aircraft. Controversially, yachts have been excluded from the scope of the luxury tax.
